Final detailed designs approved for Rundle Mall redevelopment!
Final detailed designs for Stage 1 of the Rundle Mall Redevelopment Project have been approved by Adelaide City Council and the Rundle Mall Management Authority.
Speaking at the Council meeting last night, Councillor Houssam Abiad said revitalising Rundle Mall was crucial to the future of the city.
“Rundle Mall is a key economic driver for the city – we need to increase the Mall’s competitive advantage and reinstate the Mall as a compelling City experience,” Cllr Abiad said.
“The designs are now 100% complete and it’s now over to the experts to bring the detailed designs to life and to begin revitalising the public realm of Rundle Mall.”
Adelaide-based international design firm, HASSELL led the detailed design process.
“The designs create place of real quality for people to meet, for them to enjoy the changes to the retail experience and where more regular events can happen,” said HASSELL’s Principal of Urban Design, Alun Chapman.
Stage 1 of the project will get underway in early 2013 and includes high quality paving, a new Gawler Place event space, a water play area as well as seating, lighting, bicycle racks, tree planting, landscaping and future proofing of services.
A tender process will begin in the next couple of months for materials and services.
Council and the project team will continue to consult with all stakeholders, including Rundle Mall traders, leading up to and throughout the upgrade.
